A good start

I have made a good start on the cable dress for myself.  It looks less than it is because it is worked in the round thus completing both the front and the back at the same time.  I am omitting the bobbles on the back but otherwise the pattern is the same and I am pleased with it so far.

Cosy Cowl and Knitting Relay

On the left is a photo of the piece I have made up to be part of Knitting Relay and which I will be posting off to Italy in the next few days.  I hope eventually to be able to copy a photo of the final sculpture from their Facebook page some time after the closing date in mid-March.  The photo on the right is the finished cowl that I started yesterday and the bottom photo shows the pattern in detail.

Paw Prints

I finished Ben's second sweater today and am pleased with the fit.  I have turned the collar over on this one and put some elastic in it since the first one kept slipping back - which I will do the same to if this proves to be successful. I am pleased with the random placement of the paw prints since my attempts at random usually end up looking a mess.

I have now started this cowl, using up the last of the 400g ball of blue Aran that I have used for both of Ben's sweaters.  I may keep it for myself or give it as a gift...

Square Circle Knit-A-Square

First we have the square I finished knitting today for the January Jewel Square Circle Knit-A-Square challenge.   The square will be posted off to South Africa next week where it will become part of a blanket for a child who needs it.  You can link to their facebook page using this URL - http://www.facebook.com/Knitasquare - for more information and a link to their website.
Secondly, here we have the start of a second dog coat for Ben.  The first is keeping him snug and warm but is going to need a wash soon and he would really miss the warmth should I take it off him to put it in the wash.  This one, as you can see, is going to have pawprints on it.

Completed cardigan

Here we have the completed cardigan before any sewing up or edgings being added.  To my mind it gives a view which you don't normally see when knitting a more traditional style.  I also like the way you can see the effect of having shorter rows which you don't see to the same extent on the completed garment.

And here is the completed garment - all ready for Olivia's birthday in a week's time!

Long Sides

Well, that's both the long sides completed now which means it is just the sleeve, the edgings and the making up left to do.  I bought the buttons this afternoon so will have those ready and waiting when the time comes.

Taking Shape

In this first of today's photos, the cardigan can be seen taking shape - remembering that the sleeve starts at the bottom of the picture.  At this point, I have just done a few rows of the left front after casting off in the centre for the next opening.
This second photograph shows both and left and right front flaps completed and a start having been made on the middle back.  Not a bad day's work :-)

Getting Somewhere

Knitting sideways means, of course, that you knit one of the sleeves first.  I completed that today and did a few inches of the main body.  This grows a lot more slowly because you are effectively knitting up the back and the front at the same time.  I will be able to show it photographically later on in the project but for the moment the circular needle prevents this.

The second photo shows Bethany and Jessica wearing their completed cardigans which I knitted them for their birthdays in December and November respectively.  This does, in fact, give an idea of the overall length that you are knitting when you are knitting over the shoulder - hence the circular needle to hold all the stitches.  The real benefit comes in the making up when the only seems that need to be stitched are the side and sleeve seams.

You may also notice that I have been experimenting with the layout of the page today :-)

Busy but not knitting

I've hardly done any knitting today so not worth a photo, BUT I did have a job interview this afternoon - and I did get the job!  So not a wasted day. Adding a photo anyway, just for fun.

Olivia's Birthday Cardigan

Not made much progress today as I had loads of other things to do.  I did measure up one of Olivia's jumpers to get the size and made a start on the sleeve of the sideways knitted cardigan.  With it being her birthday on Feb 3rd I have just under 2 weeks to complete it and since it is quite a simple pattern that really shouldn't be a problem.

Knitted with Love

I finished Ben's sweater as planned today - it is surprising how much knitting there is in one.  I am very pleased with the result however and hope that Ben is too.  Of course, if he is happy with it I will end up having to make a second for when this one is in the wash.  On a technical theme, the shape of this one is going to take some beating but I am going to look for a

different pattern rather than do the same one again.  Mind you, I really do not want anything that makes him look silly.  The reason for it is a practical one.

Taking Shape

Well, I didn't get as much done as I would have liked today but have made some reasonable progress and can see the sweater taking shape.  The second photo shows the true colour of the piece and my inexperience in photography leaves me at a loss as to an explanation of the difference.  The first photo is taken under artificial light so that may be it, but I really do not know.

Biscuits and Bones

An appropriate name for a dog sweater - I like it and can see it in the pattern.  The two pattern repeats and the rib are as far as I have got but it has been quite a busy day so I am going to have to be content with that for now.  Dreadful photo, mind - I need to improve my technique when taking close ups of my knitting but that could be something interesting to 'play' with.  I really like the idea of combining the two hobbies.

Project Complete

Finished the mittens today and started on a dog sweater for Ben.  He is nearly 13 with very short fur and does so feel the cold so I have decided it is time to knit him a sweater.  No photos for that one yet but hopefully I'll have one at least showing my progress tomorrow.

Better progress today

I finished the first mitten today and am currently about halfway up the second one.  I really love the pattern - and the detail on the thumb and palm.  The loose stitch as a result of working with 4 dpns is a bit of a problem in the reverse st.st on the palm.  I have tried to tease it out, but that seems to have almost made it worse (see photos).  I am hoping that washing the pair once they are finished will help.

Shopping

I have had a very busy day today so am unlikely to get any knitting done :-(  However, I did get to pick up a knitting magazine with its free gift of a knitting bag and a large ball of Aran yarn this afternoon so the day has not been lost :-)  I'm not sure that the yarn will fit in the bag, but I love the slogan on the bag and there are a few things in the magazine that I am looking forward to knitting  - or at least add to my wish list.

Enjoying a Challenge

Started some cabled mitts using a free pattern from Ravelry.com and enjoying the challenge of knitting a cable pattern entirely from a chart.  I consider myself to be an experienced knitter but am not experienced in knitting from charts other than for fair isle and intarsia so this is a new experience.  Quite pleased with the results so far, too.

Olivia & Sprinkles

Here is the photo of Olivia with Sprinkles wearing the dressing gown.  Technically it is a dreadful photo even after enhancement but, in my defence, was snapped very quickly whilst Olivia was co-operating. Going to make a start on some mittens now so maybe an update later on.

Day 1

After seeing that a lot of people have blogs these days and having recently revived my love of knitting, I have decided that it is time to create my own blog. Let's start with attempting to load the photo of the Build A Bear dressing gown I finished knitting yesterday.  It is for my youngest granddaughter's 'Sprinkles' and I hope to get a photo of her with the bear with the dressing gown on later today.
